Basil is a member of the mint family, and closely related to lavender, marjoram, oregano and thyme. Varieties of basil have been cultivated for more than 5,000 years in parts of the world ranging from the Mediterranean to Southeast Asia. Hatton Hill Organic’s basil boasts a flavour that’s similar to anise and cloves, yet deliciously distinctive.

USES: Basil is one of several herbs whose flavour changes when it is dried. The drying process gives basil more essential oil content the fresh herb and makes its flavour more pronounced when cooking. Basil is most readily associated with dishes that are heavy on tomatoes, such as certain pasta sauces, soups and stews, and with Italian cooking, in which it’s a staple ingredient. Yet a touch of dried basil can add a delicious twist to a huge range of dishes, especially if added toward the end of cooking, bringing out the fullest expression of its flavour. It pairs exceptionally well with oregano, and in dishes where the less robust taste of the fresh herb would be lost among the other ingredients, such as roasted meats, poultry, fish, vegetables or sauces and stews.

BASIL BOOST: Dried basil boasts a higher concentration of nutrients than the fresh herb, particularly vitamin K, alongside vitamins A, C, and B6, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, copper and manganese.
